Evernote? OK, I’ll give it a go.
byHappy 2009!
I’ve been playing with Evernote some and it has definitely improved since I last toyed with it. I’m thinking, now that I’m in a different environment, that it just might work for me.
Here are my requirements:
- Must be able to use it for work on a laptop that I can’t install stuff on
- Also must be able to use it at home when I often don’t have work laptop
- Must be secure enough that I can put work documents on it (which pretty much means “not online”)
- Of course must be very easy to use and manage
- And must be mobile, so I can grab things as I think of them on the go
My idea is to get one of those SanDisk U3 drives they say Evernote can be installed onto and put my things on there (getting around requirement #1). I’ll keep my work notes on an non sync-ed notebook so they never go online and security is not an issue (#3), but I can also access them at work or at home. My personal notes would be on a sync-ed notebook so I could use my iPhone and personal computer while at home (#2 & #5).
I’m going to research this some more, but in theory, it sounds like it should work. Looks like it’s just requirement #4 that is up in the air, though the FireFox plug-in and iPhone app do look promising.
Cross your fingers.

You should also look into trying one of the portable Wikis. I use TiddlyWiki, there is also Wiki on a Stick. I like that you can open them in any OS and don’t have to install any software. While on that topic, there are “modded” Tiddlys for GTD I have been trying out.
January 5th, 2009 at 11:41 amI did look into the Wikis (there are some really easy to use ones out there and I love the concept).
My problem with using a wiki is the sync factor. I can use the wiki on a stick at work, but then I’d have to use that same stick everywhere I computed, which I don’t want to do all the time. When I’m at home, I want my notes on my computer and also available on my iPhone. Here, an online wiki would work better, but I don’t want all my stuff online without protection. Well then I’d need some type of secured wiki which means I’d have to trust the system that’s securing it, but there aren’t any I trust enough to do that while keeping the reliability of future upgrades and portability if the software behind it is canned.
Evernote, so far, is allowing me to keep personal stuff personal but always available through the online syncing, but also keep my work stuff offline and with me on the stick. It’s slow so far, but I’m hoping it’s just working out the kinks in getting everything sync’d correctly since I added some (300mb) of my college notes to my account to be sync’d.
I’ll update more in a post later (today?). But that is my two cents on wikis. In short, if Evernote was a wiki, it’d be perfect, but it is wiki-ish, so we’ll see.
January 5th, 2009 at 11:58 amI had never heard of this U3 technology til now. So I ran down to the Best Buy and picked up an 8 Gig Cruzer with the U3 Smart software loaded. First thing I had to do was upgrade to 1.6. Apparently the use of the Cruzer mem stick requires an installation of some software on the computer in order to use it. Would this not be violating the 1st rule above? At any rate, I have downloaded Evernote on my iPhone and work PC - any shortcuts or tips as to the syncing process would be nice. The aftermath of every new year seems to be repleat with learning fun new technologies!
January 6th, 2009 at 2:12 pmHey Will
No, I was worried there’d be some background installation thing to work, but there is no installation on the actual computer you plug the stick into. It does have to “initialize,” but whatever it does doesn’t require admin rights on my work laptop and I have Evernote and RoboForm2Go up and working no problem as I type. Can’t get FireFox to work due to firewall stuff (I’m guessing).
Hm, no real “tips” for syncing yet–still working out some kinks in the system–but I highly recommend use of the tags in Evernote. The ability to combine tags (this AND this), create tags under tags, and share them between notebooks is outstanding.
Oh, here’s a tip: if you’re importing stuff from OneNote, allow Evernote overnight to sync…:-).
January 6th, 2009 at 2:57 pmMany defense and NASA contractors here in Huntsville, including government offices don’t even allow USB devices anymore. All issued laptops - Latitude D630s by the gazillions - have their USB ports disabled by default with special permission required to enable them. The way around that is by using one of those ethernet to USB adapters :-). Computer security is really beginning to hurt productivity in some ways.
At any rate I picked up (at Costco again, of course) one of those Acer Aspire One netbooks I think they are called now. It is amazingly small but functional. It could possibly serve as one big syncing device itself in order to consolidate work data with personal data and apps. Sometimes I think having the iPhone makes carrying a netbook around a little redundant but if tethered to a 3G network it would really rock. Anyway, I am addicted to gadgets and refuse therapy.
