Hi, my name is Tracy, and I’m a TEO 3.0-aholic
byWhen I was using GoBinder, I loved the planning features built in to the program. Having a calendar and task management right there with native ink was neat. I then switched to OneNote for the features of OneNote 2003/2007. I’m finding neither software to really be right for me anymore.
Most of my notes are sporadic, kept in random places around my computer in different formats. I have oodles of Excel files, MindManager files galore, and random PDF, Word, and PowerPoints spread around. I don’t really take many standard notes anymore. I mark up books, map out chapters, and fill in handouts. Maybe it’s an engineering thing. Maybe it’s just me. But I definitely don’t want to print all of them to OneNote just to stay organized.
What am I getting at here? I finally had the chance to play around with TEO 3.0 Beta 1 (Tablet Enhancements for Outlook). Now THIS is what I’ve been looking for (I think…I still need to test it for a semester). “But, Tracy, TEO’s just an Outlook plug-in. How on earth can that replace OneNote or GoBinder?”
The key feature TEO adds is deep ink integration and advanced notes for every item you make in Outlook. All your appointments, tasks, journals, etc., have a multi-page notes section with flags, audio recording, the natural ink of GoBinder, built in research abilities, shape recognition, and more.

Now, many people have praised Evernote for its ability to categorize, sort, and easily find things by date. It’s a great idea, however I can’t stand the ink in Evernote and it just doesn’t flow (haha get it? Flow like ink?) as well as Journal or GoBinder.
Let me just run you through some scenarios:
TEO for Lecture Notes: Say you have a physics class that meets Tuesday and Thursday 2-3 PM. If you use Outlook, it’s likely you already put this class in the calendar as a reoccurring appointment. When you get to class, you pull up Outlook and open the appointment for the class. You take the notes for the class in the Notes tab of the appointment. After the class is over, you can add a description of the day’s notes in the title, such as, “Physics - Electric Field.”

So what good does this do? All your notes are organized automatically by date with an easy visual to see exactly what notes you took last Thursday. Many times my professors will say the next test covers everything that was covered since the last test, even if that cuts chapters into pieces. Usually this means scrolling through my notes to try to guess when I took what notes and what the last test covered. If everything’s on a calendar in Outlook, I can find the date of the last test and then just study the notes in the appointments after the test.
If you currently use Journal for something and want to use TEO, TEO lets you import Journal files right into the notes sections of whatever you want.

TEO for Lecture Notes in OneNote: But what if you have a course packet you scanned in that you want to take your notes on in OneNote? Or what if you just don’t want to give up OneNote? In OneNote 2003 and 2007, you can add the class’s notebook (the .one file under “My Notebooks” or “OneNote Notebooks” in you’re My Documents folder) as an attachment (or you can attach a running record of Journal notes) and use the notes section of the appointment for a summary of what was talked about that day and random class notes like, “Guest speaker next Tuesday.”
TEO for Projects: Recently I had a big project due in one of my classes. It included several Excel files, my word documents of the write up, the notes for the class, and a PDF of the assignment. I first made a task for the project and attached all the related files.

From there it was simple. Because I have Outlook open all day long anyway, when an idea popped up for the project at a time where I couldn’t work on it, I would make a note of it on the Notes tab of the task. Having all the files attached made for zero navigation to open the assignment page for quick reference while working and also made sure I didn’t lose anything since I tend to be scattered when I’m busy.

TEO for Assignments: Homework due on Monday? Need to read something by next class? Simply make an Outlook task for the assignment (which you might already do on a regular basis) and attach the files you need to do the assignment, such as a PDF of a portion of a book. You can even do the homework right in Outlook in the notes section.
TEO for Meeting Notes: Need to know exactly what you talked about at last Wednesday’s officer meeting? Are you the secretary of some organization? When you schedule the meeting in Outlook, you automatically have a place to store you meeting minutes without needing to make a new folder on you computer, or worry about saving the Journal file on the right place, or clutter up your OneNote notebook. Because I’m the webmaster of an organization (makes sense, right?) I can attach to files that need to be updated based on what we talked about at the meeting. Since I already have Outlook running and open, I can easily create another task for something I’m assigned at the meeting, or create an appointment for a new event.
Other Neat Things About TEO 3.0
This plug-in adds so many features to Outlook that it’s really unfair to call it a plug-in. Like to chat? TEO 3.0 brings Skype integration to your Outlook contacts for easy dialing. Integration with MapPoint adds the ability to get directions to a contact’s address right there in Outlook. Recording abilities allows you to record a meeting, lecture, note-to-self, phone calls, or whatever, in any Outlook item.

When you take notes in TEO, the Notes section has a neat little tool I call the Research Assistant. When you’re writing in the notes section of anything in TEO, you can click on the tab labeled Research, click the research highlighter, and then highlight the word you want to look up. If the word stays highlighted, that means the research assistant found something and it will show the article title and give you a link to the webpage.

What makes this unique is it looks up the subject in Wikipedia, an amazing free web encyclopedia. I use it all the time for research. It’s really great for learning more about current events when you’re having trouble sorting out the news stories, as well as finding other sites and leads for research.

You can also use TEO as a daily diary/journal by making a journal entry in Outlook, and the ability to add pictures to the notes section of any item can even let you keep a photo diary without worrying about the world seeing it (or to save for a later post online).

TEO also adds organizational options, such as a prompt reminding you to categorize the item before closing, and another to automatically start the timer when you create a new journal entry in Outlook.
If you’ve tried TEO 2.0 before and stopped using it because it got in the way while you were in convertible mode or docked, it also now has an option to only create items in pen mode when you create it using the stylus instead of a mouse. Nifty, eh?
All in all, TEO 3.0 adds oodles of new possibilities for Outlook to make a useful program even better. If you’ve been having problems finding a notes system that clicks with the way you work, if you have a schedule-based lifestyle (and who doesn’t?), or if you’re looking for one more way for Outlook to control your computer time, give TEO a try.
By the way, if you’re worried about getting it now, before the release of 3.0, anyone who buys 2.0 right now gets a free upgrade to 3.0. If you’re looking for more information on TEO 3.0 (specifically, a video demo) check out GottaBeMobile.com’s InkShows.

Can TEO3.0 Replace One Note, GoBinder , et al?
Tracy Hooten seems to think so. TEO3.0 (still in beta but damn good) and its excellent ink integration certainly makes it a must have if you use Outlook and I’m a big fan. Tracy has taken things a step further
April 25th, 2006 at 1:30 pmFantastic post Tracy! I use TEO 2.0 in Outlook 2002 for all my non-blog notes and I’m looking forward to being 3.0 compatible (I’d upgrade Outlook but 2007 is so close). Your review makes me all the more anxious.
April 25th, 2006 at 2:08 pmGreat Post Tracy! You have motivated me to look into TEO for myself! I think getting organized and finding that right combination of applications for note-talking, scheduling and everything else is sometimes hard to do! Maybe TEO will help me in my own personal battle!
April 25th, 2006 at 4:19 pmI love the practical review. Btw, is that your photo, Tracy?
April 25th, 2006 at 8:13 pmThat’d be me ^_^.
April 25th, 2006 at 8:34 pmThanks Tracy for such and indepth, but concise review. I’m no longer a student, but I’ve seen that you folks push the envelope for software packages. Thanks for all the great work!
April 25th, 2006 at 9:49 pmHi tracy the site of TEO doesnt really do anything! i can just register my beta if i already have a copy, but i dont. maybe you can drop a line to the guys at TEO… i would like to see the site to decide if i will buy the software. thanks!!!
April 26th, 2006 at 1:15 amTracy…I think our Outlook agent and Inkpad should work just fine with TEO too, but would love to have you check and confirm…
April 26th, 2006 at 6:45 amCreate sections in OneNote named Test 1, Test 2, Final. This is a trivial solution to not knowing what class material was covered for each exam. Adjust titles accordingly to the exams in course. Pages and sub pages can all have different names in their header. Name one page Physics-Electric field.
Audio recording is far superior in OneNote (03 and 07). It is synced. Researching can be accomplished in OneNote too. Homework/task scheduling and linking is already integrated in OneNote with Outlook.
If you currently use Adobe, Journal, Excel, PowerPoint and so on and so on and so on OneNote 03/07 has a virtual printer and snipping tool available. Does TEO 3.0 allow for searching imported docs? OneNote 07 does. Can’t see yourself importing everything into OneNote? Then simply make a link within a note. Yah, that’s all it take in OneNote. One central place for all your notes, lol.
Tracy how much have you used Outlook’s current beta? Ink is supported for most contents on an appt., task, etc.
When using OneNote the user is only a click away from inserting a scheduled item into Outlook. I’ve been using both seamlessly for a long time. Office 2007 (beta) is the reason I tossed TEO.
TEO is just a plug-in. I see it may be swallowed up by the next release of Outlook in large part because in the future if you have Outlook’s ink you will most likely have OneNote’s note production capabilities. TEO is becoming a copycat app. Stick in audio recording here, note taking features there and just rename the product to sell more keys. It reminds me of a limited version of GoBinder. .
Can someone provide a list of what TEO 3.0 can do that OneNote/Outlook 2007 combo can’t. For someone like me that is able to integrate all my notes in OneNote via importing or linking, what would TEO 3.0 provide?
This review showed me that TEO is morphing into a barebones ink note taking app that provides Outlook with improved ink capabilities. Improvement not all that much if you are using Outlook’s current beta.
April 26th, 2006 at 12:22 pmGreat post indeed! This product receives a great boost by having you describe it and by providing the benefits you can get from your own experience. As an added bonus…you look cute too!
Great work!
April 26th, 2006 at 1:14 pmOh Frank….try as I may, I just can’t get into OneNote!
I haven’t tried the Outlook 2007 Beta yet, but just for you I will.
I think what you’re missing with my post is the fact that I don’t take many notes anymore. Yeah, OneNote 2007 audio integration…ok…but with what notes? Usually if I record something, it’s because I plan on listening to the whole thing later on anyway because my mind is wandering or something. And since I don’t take many regular notes anymore, what’s the real point of opening up a whole separate program like OneNote just to insert some links. I have Outlook open all the time, and I use the calendar like it’s life support. If I’m already there, why not stay there?
Since you asked, the OneNote/Outlook combo doensn’t have Skype, Wikipedia, MapPoint, and other database integration. I also have to use two programs instead of one. I like things all in one package.
OneNote 2007 is pretty cool, and I really like the auto search capabilities….but I don’t know, it just seems…I can’t even explain why I can’t get into OneNote. I just can’t. I just don’t think it’s for me. Oh wait, I know why I can’t get into 2007 beta. Every time I use it, it crashed and I lose what I wrote. That will obviously be cleared up, but for now…
Also, I don’t really see any reason for TEO to support OCR considering there’s not a reason to import documents to it. Heh, Frank, have you tried TEO 3.0?
April 26th, 2006 at 5:24 pmSkype, Wykipedia, MapPoint, and other database integration. Key word integration. TEO integrates as does OneNote.
My TEO 3.0 experience comes from the same reviews linked to the many tablet pc sites out there—those ingenious ink shows are super. If it’s for you than cheers to you for finding that perfect application meeting your needs.
From your post it seems that you think the only way to integrate other files in OneNote is through some kind of printing which is not the case.
Wykipidia? OneNote includes Encarta instead of Wykipedia as its net encyclopedia. The OneNote team didn’t stop there though. They also squeezed in language translations, dictionaries and a thesaurus.
Your post about TEO has many cool things, but OneNote still runs circles around similar features (linking, researching, inserting, centralizing). You may need some more time with the Office beta. It does crash often. Sometimes twice in one class for me. The cool thing is that it’s up and running again within 4 or 5 seconds.
Sure you may believe I hold OneNote as the only possibly great note taking app out there. Not the case. Your post pointed out many features that are already in OneNote. I’m certain GoBinder and MindManager could have been used to show the bare bones note taking features of TEO also.
I’m still wondering what can I gain by using TEO 3.0 if I’m already using the current Office beta. I recall reading TEO 3.0 not being compatible with Outlook 07. Will look it over again when time permits. Okay, just made an Outlook task while in OneNote to read TEO 3.0’s installation requirements…lol.
April 26th, 2006 at 6:48 pmI enjoyed those posts. First, I wish I had money to get TEO 3.0. I was impressed with the beta while I had access. I also look forward to the new Office package. I think that will meet my needs quite well. Although, staying in one spot is a key point. When I start seeing patients, I won’t want to move between programs if I don’t have to. Anywho, thanks for the review. Now if I can just someone to get me the software I need!
April 26th, 2006 at 7:10 pmSharon - try http://www.tabletoutlook.com to look at the current program.
April 26th, 2006 at 7:33 pmHey Frank, sorry you think TEO sucks so much but that’s ok cause the great thing about America and most free countries is that you have choice. OneNote is cool but I don’t like having a separate app. It also costs twice as much.
Also, if you have a problem with OneNote, what are the chances you’re going to get a useful answer from the developer? Not likely.
Will TEO ever be as full featured as OneNote for note taking? Of course not. But it spans much more than that. Do you use Exchange server? If so then you might notice that you can’t sync OneNote content. TEO gets that through the power of Outlook.
Can you create contacts with OneNote? No. Tasks? You can export them but now you’ve got them in 2 places. Appointments? Same story.
If you’re a hard core note taker, then I agree, OneNote is a much better solution. If you want an all-in-one app, then TEO is better.
Hey I’m just one guy but the fact that you’re even comparing me to OneNote, the product of a multi billion dollar corporation is flattering. Thanks!
April 26th, 2006 at 7:44 pmDear Tracy,
FANTASTIC article. I am considering a TabletPC and want your opinion on real estate. How important is screen size when taking notes. I am an online student that does not attend lectures but has notes to read and review and comment, etc. For the purposes of studying and note taking, how important is screen size? I am considering Levono X41 and Fujitsu P1510D.
Thanks, Nick
April 27th, 2006 at 3:48 pmTracey, your TEO review di it for me. As a teacher I loved OneNote but after using TEO 3.0 I will NEVER look back. One app is the ONLY way to go! TEO is WAY worth the $$. Had an issue with the install and the developer called me within an hour…remarkable!!
The other “poster” that was so crazy about OneNote made some good points and I would totally agree with him but I do not have the time to manage 2 apps and with one that does so much my life is so much easier. This is a great product and your review was just what I needed to get me to make the switch.
BTW only recently found your site…it is excellent!
April 29th, 2006 at 6:37 pmhey tracy. i love your reviews and am really considering a slate pc. i start dental school this fall. nyu has eliminated all text books and are all on a dvd called vitalbook or something. anyway, could i copy and paste the text onto outlook (by outlook, you don’t mean the MS email prog i hope) and then mark it up with notes/highlights/drawings and have outlook save all the additions i make to the text? i think this may be perfect for me. also, does it save markings to pdf files as well or do i have import them to outlook? thanks for your help.
p.s. can u believe i thought about not buying one b/c i thought writing with a stylus was like writing a signature at the store for credit card purchases? hehe.
May 3rd, 2006 at 3:59 pmWill the written notes be part of the Outlook pst file? There appears to be a 2 gig threshold wherein at ~ 2 gigs Outlook crawls.
May 7th, 2006 at 10:20 pmhehehehe sophomore E&M…i remember it well. i also recognized your facebook photo. in any event, i tried TEO for a day or two, but i don’t usually do outlook stuff in tablet mode, b/c it’s still faster to type. also, all my comments now are premature b/c i haven’t started taking notes on the tablet, and am just getting my feet wet before grad school etc. i’ve used onenote for compiling data from 1000 resources, like when i needed to stalk people for info and clip and mark stuff up and get all the data on one spread. that was nice. i do think onenote is clumsy though, and too complicated for regular notetaking. i HATE the dragging box thing, and my stuff gets good and messed up. i wasn’t so impressed with gobinder lite as a copycat app, and journal is nice but simplistic. so i think i’ll end up organizing everything in onenote. for the person who said it’s more expensive than TEO- it comes free with most tablets nowadays. i’m not going to pay for something if i have something that can do the same thing already.
May 11th, 2006 at 2:34 amTANSTAAFL….;-) But I know what you mean.
May 11th, 2006 at 2:42 amNice post Tracy!Your excellent review insisted me to look into TEO.I have find it very impressive and very useful. I am an online student that does not attend lectures but has notes to read and review .Even when you may see a different aspects on this view,Like that one: http://www.coursework4you.co.uk/sprtmbd7.htm.Thanks for your help and your thoughts.

The health and research involved in the methods are more accessible than ever, and because of this it is wise to peek inside to that world for those wanting a larger penis.

April 24th, 2009 at 4:31 amThese natural capsules contain 100% herbal ingredients. The right pills taken in the right way can restore your sexual function without unpleasant side effects. You do not require a doctor’s prescription. Most leading brands have been formulated by professional teams of medical doctors with many years of experience and research. Avoid any herbal pill that promises instant results the minute you take them as they are likely to contain less than 100% natural ingredients.
